From Us to You: Free Rides for the Holidays

Go Metro. Go Free.

The holidays can be a hectic time of the year, from beach parking on the 4th of July to crazy parking lines during Christmas week. Metro is here to help. Starting May 1st, Metro Rails, Buses, and Bikes will be free on federal holidays. Giving you another reason to celebrate, it’s completely free. No app, no card, no change. Just hop on. We know holiday traffic in Los Angeles is no joke, especially on beautiful sunny days, or last-minute Christmas shopping. Riders across the city can hop on buses, trains, and trolleys without paying a cent.

What Holidays are included? Here’s a list of all federal holidays and applicable days.

This move isn’t just about spreading holiday joy. It’s a way to reintroduce riders to transit, ease congestion, support local businesses, and remind everyone just how convenient and stress-free public transportation can be.

Free transit doesn’t just benefit riders, it’s a gift to the city. More people are encouraged to leave their cars behind and take the bus or train to local markets, mom-and-pop stores, and restaurants. Creating less traffic, no stress about parking, and more foot traffic for businesses that depend on the holiday rush.

This is a love letter to Los Angeles, spending time on the bus, train, or even a bike ride opens doors to places you may have never seen when driving by. Stopping at The Last Bookstore in Downtown for the book lover in your life, or taking the train to the Ivy Station in Culver City to shop at The Platform. Transit shows visitors, travelers, and locals alike new experiences through the city.

In addition to the ease of the holiday shopping and seeing the city from a new lens, we understand Los Angeles is full of culture and celebrations. We want to emphasize a culture of safety, which is why Metro added more than just federal holidays. Days like New Year’s Eve, St. Patrick’s Day, Cinco De Mayo, and Halloween have high impaired driving accidents. We have teams of dedicated drivers here to help you get to and from your celebration destinations. We’ve expanded our lines on certain holidays to run until 3:00 AM to get you home safely and free.
